RCM Performance Simulator

Ammonite were approached by The Royal College Of Music, in collaboration with Imperial College, to produce a state-of-the-art laboratory at their flagship London faculty.  Ten years ago Imperial College created a small-scale experiment for RCM, using short videos of an audience looking engaged, enthralled or disinterested, students could perform in front a screen before a tutor triggered various reactions.  RCM & IC secured funding to expand this principle and we were engaged to transfer the concept into a larger performance hall; to design and create the hardware and software we called upon all our in-house team as well as external collaborators, including movement artists, sound designers, architects, 3D modellers, lighting designers, script writers, gaming engine developers, interface designers and systems designers.

The result is a real-time engine presented across three projection surfaces creating an immersive space, transported the performer onto one of five stages and confronting them with scenarios akin to live performance.  Tutors can adapt the number of audience members, the engagement of said audience, introduce distractions such as phones, coughs and alarms, before finishing with rapturous applause or underwhelmed clapping.  The digital experience is augmented with real-world systems including a comprehensive lighting rig; stage lights are intentionally focused to catch your eye, and as their colour changes so does the reflected light in the simulator, creating a seamless link between digital and physical.  The space includes 70 speakers and the lasted acoustic management from Meyer Constellation, allowing the environment to be transformed from a dank jazz bar to a vibrant concert hall.

This project was developed with our long-term collaborators at FRAY STUDIOS as well as Carolyn Downing, Daniel Orchard and G2 Digital.  Ammonite sat at the centre of the Simulators development and are thrilled to bring this experience to the RCM faculty.
